The ZeroZeros (00s) is the term we give to the 2000s, also known as the first decade of the twenty-first century, also known as the years 2000 through 2009. There is currently no accepted word for the decade, so we figure this is as good as any other! Although, as of late it has also been referred to as “the aughts” and “the noughties” or maybe just “the oh-ohs”).

Some interesting points about the ZeroZeros:

  • it “officially” started on January 1st, 2000 and ended December 31st, 2009
  • the 21st century and the 3rd millennium officially began on January 1st, 2001
  • the year 2000 is still considered part of the 20th century

The aim of this site is to give information on the political and artistic culture of the 2000s, which includes commentary, lists, references, and other historical data so we can try to make sense of this decade we’re in.

For many people, the decade really started on September 11, 2001, and we suppose you could use that as a starting point. 9/11 and the subsequent American-led War on Terror has cast such a huge shadow over the decade that it’s hard to think of anything else. But we’re gonna try. For one thing, many people don’t realize the leap in use of telecommunications this decade has given us. Even though we didn’t have anything close to a Space Odyssey in 2001 we do have those cool communicators that the 60s Star Trek era teased us about. Naturally, we’re talking about cell phones, which have become so ubiquitous that phone companies running land lines are threatened and if you spot a pay phone it’s a rare occurrence. The rise of the Internet, started in the 90s, has morphed itself into Web 2.0, blogging, and the behemoth that is Google. Don’t forget that processing power and data storage is extremely cheap and advanced. IPods have changed the way we listen to music. And we are finally getting high definition technology along with extremely thin flat screen displays to replace those damn CRTs!

In the meantime, we hope you haven’t wasted all your nostalgia on the 80s.
